The Short Cut designed to bring you a snapshot of our members’ working lives. Today we’re speaking to Dr Ama Frimpong Head of Product Development, at 52 North Health

Tell us about your breakthrough career moment

I would have never pursued engineering. I wanted to be a medical doctor.

Universities in London used to offer ‘Taster courses’ when i was in 6th form and thinking of courses and university choices, so I applied for a few to explore medical schools in the city.

I was accidentally placed on one for Medical and Materials Engineering at Queen Mary – a fact I didn’t register till I walked into the demonstration lab and realised I was in the wrong place. That was how I ended up switching interests and applying for engineering instead.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever had?

Sometimes growth does not feel comfortable, but it doesn’t mean it’s not worthwhile.

Have you ever felt held back as a woman in business? How did you respond?

Yes and I very much wanted to push and forge my way through, but realised leaving and flourishing somewhere else was a much a better option in that particular case.

How do you protect your mental health in moments of pressure?

I think of my daughter and/or rely on my faith. Helps me to re-centre

Do you have any hobbies to keep you busy in your spare time?

Sewing and ad-hoc craft making!

I feel empowered when…

… I’m able to impact someone else with my actions

The world would be a better place when…

…we understand that we are all different.

The woman who empowers me the most is…

…My mother. The first woman I saw successfully juggling career, entrepreneurship, family, charity and activism.

Where is your favourite place in the world?

My home
