At the heart of the Nurture Network is the power of sharing experiences. From breakthrough career moments, to best ever advice, how to deal with stress and the women that inspire them.

The Short Cut designed to bring you a snapshot of our members’ working lives. Today we’re speaking to Rukayyat Modupe Kolawole, founder & CEO at PaceUP Invest.

Tell us about your breakthrough career moment

When I finally started PaceUP Invest to focus on impacting women and underrepresented communities to take control of their finances and become financially independent. The impact on them has been immense. 75% impacted to change their financial habits, and 50% impacted to invest in building sustainable and generational wealth.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever had?

Get a sponsor, not a mentor! A mentor is nice to have, and one can survive without a mentor. One cannot ascend in an organisation without a sponsor.

Have you ever felt held back as a women?

When society wants to tell me that I cannot succeed as a black woman. I succeed, nonetheless. Success is the best revenge!

How do you protect your mental health in moments of pressure?

I focus on what is important vs what is urgent and delegate as much as I can. Exercise is also very important. I take a moment to deep breath and go for walks.

Do you have any hobbies to keep you busy in your spare time?

I play golf, love nature walks with my family.

I feel empowered when…

… I empower others.

The world would be a better place when…

…there is social and gender justice.

The woman everyone should know about is…

The woman who empowers me the most is…

…My grandmother (RIP) and my mother.

The first thing I do in the morning is…

Say a little prayer for the day ahead.
